“A sustainable building: outcome of design which focuses on increasing the efficiency of resource use — energy, water, and materials — while reducing building impacts on human health and the environment during the building’s lifecycle, through better siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal.”

—Anne B. Frej, editor, Green Office Buildings: A Practical Guide to Development

Sustainable Building

We describe our approach to "Green Building" as "Mindful Building". We have extensive experience with sustainable materials and practices, but we believe it is part of a bigger picture. Mindful building means not only green/sustainable practices, but also consideration of the larger social impacts. From practicing green building to supporting local community health and welfare, we are committed to sustainable building on a professional, personal and community level. From the use of biofuels to our solar-powered workshop, Earthtone strives to minimize adverse environmental impact.

Our sustainable building practices are informed by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™. With a LEED Accredited Professional (AP) in-house we have practical experience incorporating the U.S. Green Building Council's guidelines for green building into all our projects, not just those which are LEED-certified buildings.

Our sustainability and LEED practices consider:

  • Minimizing disruption and erosion of site and evaluation of local climate and conditions
  • Water efficiency through use of water saving devices, smart irrigation controls and systems for collection and reuse
  • Minimizing energy consumption through passive design, enhanced insulation and energy saving equipment
  • Rapidly renewable and re-used materials and resources
  • Improving indoor environmental quality by minimizing or eliminating the use of toxins and by optimized ventilation
  • Local sourcing of labor and materials to reduce transportation emissions and maintaining community economy

Social Responsibility

Beyond the measures we take to ensure that a project is "sustainable" we believe that our social responsibility extends more broadly to the health and welfare of our communities.
